What Are The Benefits Of Walking?

The benefits of an active lifestyle and keeping fit and healthy are well documented.

Specifically, it is well known that regular exercise can have numerous positive effects on your mental health as well as your physical health. What is not as commonly known is that you don’t have to go for a long run or non-stop hit cardio class to reap the benefits.

In reality, going for a simple walk can have countless benefits for your health and wellbeing.

If you are embarking on a new fitness regime, you should always visit your primary care physician first.

Here are some of the benefits of walking:

  • Walking can improve your cardiovascular and pulmonary health i.e. your heart and lung health. This in turn can help reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease or strokes.
  • Walking can also help you to successfully manage common medical conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, diabetes, and joint and muscular pain or stiffness. Remember, if you suffer from any of these conditions you should always visit your physician to discuss their implications and how to best manage them for you first.
  • The benefits of walking also extend to the ability to lose weight. Walking increases heart rate, which speeds up metabolism and helps to burn fat. Specifically, maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is a great way to help keep you fit and healthy. If weight management is something you are keen to know more about, visit your physician to discuss how you can get started.
  • Additionally, walking can help to keep your muscles and bones healthy. As you age, your bones and muscles naturally become frailer. However, if you consistently walk, you can prevent trips, slips, and falls even when you reach old age.

The benefits of walking extend past the improvement you might see on your physical health and will impart benefits on your mental health too.

Walking is exercise and exercise is scientifically proven to release endorphins, which help boost your mood. It also forces you out into the fresh air and potentially into nature, both of which have positive effects on your mental wellbeing.

How long should you walk for?

Walking from the couch to the fridge does not count as walking. If you want to truly reap the benefits of walking, you need to try to walk for around 30 minutes at a brisk pace.

That said, something is better than nothing. For example, if all you have time for is 15 minutes, then it is still worth doing. If you can not walk at a speedy pace in the beginning, then build up to it. Don’t be put off by a slow start; the more you do, the better (or faster) you will become.

The benefits of walking are numerous and multifaceted. Moreover, they can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes a day. This could be your morning commute or walk to the local coffee shop on a Sunday. Do something positive for yourself and get out in the fresh air for a walk!
