When Is It Time to See a Cough Doctor?

Everyone has a cough from time to time. Whether you have a dry throat or a cough as part of a cold, most coughs go away on their own. However, a persistent cough can be a symptom of a more serious health concern like bronchitis or pneumonia. It is important to know when it is time to seek the medical attention of a cough doctor to get the health care you need.

Coughing is your body’s way of clearing anything that irritates your lungs or airways. A “tickle” in your throat can make you cough, as can phlegm in the lungs or bronchial tubes when you have a cold. A cough on its own is a natural occurrence, but when accompanied by other symptoms, it can be a sign of more serious issues. When you have a severe cough, a doctor visit may be needed to ensure it is not a symptom of infection or other serious health problems.

When You Need to Call a Cough Doctor

A cough on its own is usually not a concern, unless it lasts too long. If for several weeks you have had a cough, a doctor visit is probably a good idea. However, there are other symptoms that can accompany a cough that are signs it could be more serious. If you have any of these symptoms with your cough, a doctor examination is a good idea.

  • You have a fever over 100 degrees
  • You are coughing up greenish or yellowish mucus
  • You are wheezing or experiencing shortness of breath
  • You are coughing up blood or pinkish phlegm
  • You are having trouble breathing or swallowing
  • You begin choking

If you or a family member is coughing and having severe trouble breathing, or begins to choke, an emergency medical visit is warranted for your cough. Doctor clinics that offer urgent care or an ER can ensure you get the immediate medical care you need.

A severe cough with additional symptoms can be a sign of bronchitis, pneumonia, severe flu, croup, whooping cough, emphysema, acute sinusitis, lung cancer, COPD and even heart failure. Knowing when to consult a cough doctor can ensure that you or your family member gets the diagnosis and medical care needed when a cough is a symptom of a more serious illness.
